Front illuminated vs back illuminated ccd

WebThe back surface, where light enters a CCD in the back-illuminated configuration, is typically antireflection (AR) coated. These coatings are not perfect, however, and their effectiveness varies by wavelength. Most CCD back-surface antireflection coatings are not optimized for the NIR. WebWe have developed techniques to produce back illuminated CCDs from commercial front illuminated devices for enhanced quantum efficiency and spectral coverage. In this paper we discuss our development of packages and packaging techniques to butt back illuminated CCDs together, creating mosaics of up to 64 million pixels.
