WebMaybach-Motorenbau GmbH (Maybach) was a German engine manufacturer that started to develop and produce high end automobiles. Maybach was founded in 1909 and produced vehicles from 1921 to the beginning of World War II in 1940. Daimler-Benz acquired Maybach, which were still producing commercial grade engines, in 1960. WebSuch was the pace of development that the W1’s power output of 46bhp was soon eclipsed by the 70bhp offered by an improved version of the engine, the W2. At this point in time, Maybach did not intend to become a car manufacturer. Accordingly, they were happy to enter into an agreement to supply 1000 W2 engines to Spyker, a Dutch car manufacturer.
